BELLEVILLE FOURTH OF JULY ACTIVITIES - 2009

As many flock to the shore to escape the heat and chaos of the city life at holiday time, many other Bellevillites will stay home to experience the traditional ceremonies of the Independence Day celebration here in town.

To begin the festivities on Saturday, July 4, the Recreation Department will hold its annual field day for youngsters, ages 4 - 12 at the Municipal Stadium starting promptly at 9:30 a.m.

The events, which will be open to all young Belleville residents, will be divided into three categories.  There is a Junior division for ages 4 - 6; An Intermediate division for ages 7 - 9; and a Senior division for ages 10 - 12.

Events will include the 25, 50 and 100 yard dash, an agility race, a three-legged race, sack race, a girl’s tug-of-war and a boy’s tug-of-war.

All activities will be conducted by the members of the Belleville Recreation playground staff. Ribbons will be awarded to the first, second and third-place finishers and all will share in slices of watermelon.

On Saturday night, July 4, a fireworks display will be presented at the Stadium starting at sundown  (approximately 9:15 p.m).  The rain date for these events will be Sunday, July 5.

On July 4th, there will also be a Pre-Fireworks show beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Municipal Stadium.  This year’s entertainment will include continuous music by a disc jockey, as well as the following performances:

 MAGIC SHOW – featuring Joe Fischer
8:00 p.m.

Sand Art and Spin Art will also be offered for a nominal fee, as well as
Refreshments/ concessionaires.

In all, it promises to be an exciting holiday and Bellevillites young and old are invited to share in the glitter of our country’s historic day.

FOOTBALL COACHES NEEDED – 2009

The Belleville Recreation Department is seeking persons interested in coaching in its ‘Junior Bucs’ and Touch Football programs.  All volunteer coaches will be required to attend a Rutgers S.A.F.E.T.Y. Clinic before the season begins.

Jr. Bucs Football games are played on Sunday afternoons and occasional Friday or Saturday nights, beginning in early September.  Practices are conducted weeknights at the Stadium, beginning in August.  Touch Football will be played in town. (T.B.A.)

Those interested in coaching can pick up an application at the Recreation Department 407 Joralemon St. weekdays before 4:00 p.m.

At this time the CDC, NJDHSS, and local public health recommend the public take the following steps in light of the current situation:

• Practice good respiratory etiquette – cover coughs and sneezes and throw away used tissues.
• Wash your hands thoroughly and often with soap and water.  Use hand sanitizer when handwashing is unavailable.
• Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth as this can spread disease.
• Stay home if you are sick, keep children home from school if they are sick.
• Families should review their family preparedness plans which include:
1. Have two weeks worth of food and bottled water (one gallon per day per person) for you and your family.  This should include food that does not need refrigeration.
2. Two weeks worth of prescription medications.
3. Two weeks worth of ibuprofen or acetaminophen (Tylenol) for each person in the house for fever and pain.  A two-week supply of cough medicine.
4. Rehydration solution such as Pedialyte for kids and Gatorade for adults and teens.
5. Cell phone and charger.
6. Supply of plastic gloves (this will help protect you if you are caring for someone sick).
7. Disinfectants and chlorine bleach.

Belleville / Nutley DAV Building Makes Its Debut

American flags lined the sidewalk leading to the entrance of the building at 612 Mill St. in Belleville. A wreath swathed in red, white and blue was placed carefully in front of the building. Inside, veterans, members of their families and dignitaries gathered, waiting to celebrate the official dedication and opening of the Chapter 22 Nutley- Belleville Disabled American Veterans (DAV) new home.
