PUBLIC NOTICE: VACANCY ON THE BELLEVILLE BOARD OF EDUCATION
Posted September 14, 2026NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that an immediate vacancy exists on the Belleville Board of Education. The Board is seeking qualified residents of Belleville who are interested in being considered for appointment to fill the vacant Board of Education Trustee position.
TERM OF APPOINTMENT
Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 18A:12-15, the vacancy may be filled by a majority vote of the remaining members of the Board of Education.
The individual selected for appointment is anticipated to begin serving in October 2026 and will serve for the remainder of the current term, through the Board of Education’s Reorganization Meeting, currently scheduled for January 6, 2027.
QUALIFICATIONS
Interested candidates must:
- Be a citizen of the United States;
- Be a resident of the Belleville School District for at least one year immediately preceding the appointment;
- Be able to read and write;
- Be a registered voter in the Belleville School District;
- Not be disqualified as a voter pursuant to R.S. 19:4-1;
- Not have been convicted of a crime or offense that would disqualify the individual from Board membership under N.J.S.A. 18A:12-1; and
- Meet all other qualifications and requirements for membership on a local board of education under New Jersey law.
Additionally, pursuant to N.J.S.A. 18A:12-2, a Board member may not have a direct or indirect interest in any contract with or claim against the Board and may not simultaneously serve as Mayor or as a member of the governing body of the Township of Belleville.

Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.
The successful candidate will be required to satisfy all statutory requirements applicable to appointed Board of Education members, including applicable criminal history, disclosure, ethics, and training requirements.
