Black History Month Tribute & After-Hours Lecture at the Library

The Belleville Township Council, in conjunction with the Belleville Public Library, hosted a Black History Month Tribute and After-Hours Lecture on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at the Library.

Students from Belleville High School participated in a presentation honoring some of the township’s prominent and historical residents including Samuel Cornish, editor of the first black owned newspaper in America “Freedom’s Journal,” and Lonnie Bunch, founder of the Museum of African American History and Culture.

Closing the evening was featured guest speaker the Honorable Mayor Ras Baraka of Newark, who ended the evening with a reading that drew a standing ovation from the crowd.
